Catskill Mountain doe and a few lessons
« on: October 17, 2015, 11:39:00 PM »
Terry Receveur and I met up at in Delaware Co for the TBONY Catskill hunt. We got to my mom and dads place said our hellos then hit the woods. It was typical fall Catskill Mountain weather, rain, sun, clouds, wind...but it was beautiful!!

Nothing moving That night except a doe that we spooked walking to our stands. We hit another spot on the mountain Saturday morning. I dropped Terry off near the edge of a green field. I went in several hundred yards up the road. I set up over looking a logging road and clear cut going up hill. 735 I had Two does come in with two fawns. The bigger doe gave me a BEAUTIFUL quartering away shot at 10 yards......only prob was that she was that I was set up with for a shot on the opposite side. She they came in with the wind at thier backs!!!  By the time I get in position, the doe had walked out of range.  At 815 a loan doe came in and walked through the clear cut. I drew and released. My heart sdnk as I could see the path of the arrow was headed towards the pounch....but she steped forward and I hit her in the hams!!!  I NEVER PICKED A SOOT!!     :knothead:
As the doe started to run, I saw blood spraying from where I hit her. The razor sharp Magnus sliced through the artery.

The blood trail was not hard to follow.

She only went about 50-60 yards. The bad hit bothers me a bit.  I rushed the shot, which is something that I usually don't do.  That scary sharp Magnus saved me!!

I actually killed my very first deer with that hit back in 1982!!

So Terry and I hit the woods again after some bacon eggs and home fries. The wind picked up, I was set up in an old over grown orchard. About 615 I had about a 110-120 in 8 pt come in to about 60 yards. Man he was pretty!!  We left the woods, said our good byes and were on our way. I was disappointed that I couldn't put Terry on some deer.

Sure is a nice sized nanny...  glad you got the recovery. Those iffy shots sure take a toll on the mind.

Congratulations!
