I shot my first deer with traditional equipment yesterday 10/24/15. I was using my recurve 51# @ 28" the shot was range finder verified at 36 yards. It has been a slightly frustrating season, this is my first year using only traditional equipment, I have missed four deer and hit a small doe that after hours of searching I could not find it. Yesterday everything changed, I had been set up for about 3 1/2 hours in a field corner that is bordered by a creek and a grove of shag bark hickory trees. I was getting a little bored and decided to try hitting my grunt tube, almost immediately I heard a deer walking my way, I assumed it would be a buck but as the deer came into view I realized it was a 1 1/2 year old doe. I immediately made a he decision to take her if given the opportunity. She started looking around trying to locate the source of the grunt, hoping she would come closer I held off on shooting but when she didn't see the deer that grunted she started to walk away she was quartering away from me facing my left I picked my spot drew anchored and released all in one smooth motion. The arrow struck just behind the last rib on her left side slightly lower than I was aiming but the two blade single bevel did the trick, the arrow center punched the heart and hit the off side leg. After following an easy blood trail for about 75-80 yards I found her piled up! Traditional archery has been a wild ride for me but I am most definitely hooked and can't wait to get my next deer with traditional gear.
