Dark wood bows
« on: October 29, 2015, 08:10:00 PM »
I have started building myself a new recurve. I have had the urge to make one out of darker woods. It will be made out of cocobolo and Macassar ebony. I have done a lot of searching for pic of bows in that combination or similar. Was just wondering if anyone has something they would care to share. I am really liking how things look so far but hope it doesn't end up to dark.  All pic welcome.

Here is a link to my bow with pics.  It has wenge in the riser, but lighter Myrtle too.  Love dark bows myself too.

Cocobolo will age to a dark chocolate color and is a very dense wood,so if you like more heft in your bow, you will like cocobolo.

Can't help with the ebony, but I can add another cocobolo and myrtle. My Orion has black glass swoops as well.

Cocobolo is pretty sweet!

I have a Sarrels longbow made from ziricote (riser) and black walnut (Limb veneers), it's all dark and very nice looking.

Dark woods look great, the only thing that could be problematic, if it matters to you, is the quality of glass you will be getting. You could have the most beautiful and figurative veneers for the limbs, just to be detracted by silver streaked & poor quality glass.

30coupe nice and have to agree cocobolo is pretty sweet.

Bisch that would look good together.

Denny the glass looks pretty clear will find out in a day or two when I glue up some limbs.

It may take you a while but if you do a search of my username you will come up with pics of my Gharing bow which has one of the densest, darkest Cocobolo risers you will ever see...I really like my RER LXR which is Wenge, Bloodwood and particularly dark Bocote...there is no light coloured wood anywhere on that bow...one thing about that bow is that it almost defies being photographed which to me means it is naturally hard to see...not sure what it looks like to a game animal

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

That Ibex sure has a cool profile. Do you have a full draw pic?

This is a JavaMan Helms Deep that I shot at K'zoo Expo early this year. I', hoping Greg can come up with something very similar for me.

The riser is cocobolo and black phenolic. The limbs are curly etimoe.

Strikes me a very restrained elegance.
