Wood arrow help for a woodie rookie

I'm wanting to try some wood arrows and plan to order a test pack from Surewood but don't know where to start. So I'm shooting two cut to center longbows; a Big Jim Buffalo and Thunderchild, one is 54@28 the other 50@28. I draw just short of 30" so I figure I'm shooting 55-60 pounds between the two, fast flite strings, need 31 inch shafts BOP, would like to shoot 150-160 grain heads. I generally require stiffer shafts than most recommend, currently shooting 340 spine Axis with 250-275 grains up front. So what would be a good starting spine for woodies? Parallel or tapered? Thanks for the help.

With your setup you will need a lot stiffer shafts than 55/60's. With your 30" draw length you are pulling about 6# more for each bow. Then you are adding weight over the standard 125gr for pt. weight. I would look at 80/85's.

55-60 plus 15 pounds for 3 inches over 28 inch shaft

plus 5 pounds for 150 grain heads

I would start with 75-80 and try to cut down your arrows as short as possible.  If you draw just shy of 30" the you should not need more than a 31 inch shaft net.

That will help.

Stick with cheaper parallel until you figure this wood thing out.

Well, I'd suggest a stiffer spine about 65-70# due to your draw length & the heavier points...

I shoot 55-60# PO cedars with 125gr. tips out of my 50# recurves. I draw 28" on the button, and my arrows are cut 30" then tapered & points glued. About 29 1/4" BOP.

thanks guys, that is the info I was looking for and about where I figured I'd need to start. What kinda weight can I expect with finished 80# spined Doug fir arrow with 150 grain points?

You'll be in the 650-700 gr range with that kind of pt. weight.

Roger!!!!! I was figuring 55-60 @ 28"  60-65 @ 29" 65-70 @ 30"  Guess I forgot about the extra point weight???

Test pack from Surewood has been ordered, it'll come with four each of 70-75, 75-80, 80-85. Should be able to get one of those to work I think. Thanks again, I'll let ya'll know how they play out.

70-75 spine based on your draw (if it is true draw)..length of arrow if you go 1/2 inch longer than BOP...and the extra weight of head.  I might go slightly longer as well due to your bows being center shot.  Are they center shot or cut left of center slightly (right hand bow)?  Reason I ask is if they are CUT TO CENTER then the arrow is going to be left of center and need slightly weaker spine....if cut past center and arrow is actually centered then maybe slightly stiffer.

I would try a test pack with 75-80# as the center point for the weights to try....so a range from 70-85 should work to try all things being equal.
