Low poundage bow kill?
« on: November 16, 2015, 01:22:00 AM »
Hey all just wanted to see some results of low poundage hunting like 45 pounds or less.  anyone have some pics? How capable is a 40 pound bow at taking deer?

I'm thinking of trying it out and want a little reassurance. With my Minateman recurve I am guessing I shoot about 40 pounds at my draw length. I will be shooting POC woodies with a 125 grain eskimo BH. Total arrow weight is around 450 grains. What kind of penetration can I expect with this set up?

I shoot mostly 45-50  lb bows. Never had a problem with getting the job done assuming I do my part!

Here are a few 45lb kills from this year's goat season in Hawaii,
The K-mag is a champ!

Montana is not bad either!

A 45 pound bow will definitely do its job. 40 lb bow will too. I have a good friend who has killed pigs and goats with a 40 lb bow. Just put a sharp boradhead in the boiler room.
Good luck and happy hunting.

Awesome! Looks beautiful there, I hope I will be able to hunt the island some day. What BH are you using?

Great, thanks ceme24, lots of good info to go over in there, looks like a 40 pound bow has no trouble getting it done.

For what it's worth, in WI 30# is the minimum for use on whitetail.

40 pounds has killed a bunch of deer and will continue to do so.  Understand tho, that 40 is on the low end of power for the task and won't cut you much slack.  Perfectly tuned arrows, very sharp broadheads, good shot placement and self discipline are needed.  Quartering and steep treestand shots are very likely to not attain full penetration and an exit hole which often means a poor bloodtrail.  I would recommend you try for the most efficient/effective bow and arrow combo possible.

I shoot a psa widow pulling 42# at my 29 inches and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot at any deer with it

If you do your part with tuning, shot placement, and a very sharp broadhead then 40# is more than enough, at least for a MS whitetail.  My best friend's daughter has killed a couple pulling around 25# @ 25", the longest shot being approximately 25 yds.  It went maybe 65 yds before piling up, a 100+ pound doe.
