Today was an annual rabbit hunt with a couple friends of mine. I arrived with bow in hand, ready to hunt. It was than that I realized I was the only guy toting a bow on this rabbit hunt.
At first I was slightly overwhelmed, I have been trying for several years with no success on hitting a rabbit with a bow. And to add to the fact that the gunners would make quick work of any rabbit I may have a chance at.
But I had my bow with me and I was not going to give in that easily. I decided I would rather miss rabbits with my bow than easily shoot a limit with a shotgun. Plus, this was the first time hunting with the recurve that my grandpa gave me, which started my love with trad. With that we went hunting.
I climbed into a old tower stand overlooking a nice area that the guys were going to put the beagle through. The rabbit movement was slow, but after 10 minutes of searching a rabbit bolted out of the brush.
The rabbit was running right towards me, I had no hope of hitting it but I drew back anyway. As the rabbit entered the opening the arrow was on its way. I about fell out of that tree stand when I saw that arrow smack that rabbit!!!
The rabbit ran 60 yards and died. I was so happy to finally connect on a running rabbit!! And to make it better to have the first shot at an animal with my grandpas bow connect was icing on the cake.
I scooped up my trophy and headed back to the stand. A few minutes the dog had another rabbit up. It circled around and started coming down the same trail the first rabbit was on. I drew back and lead it as it entered that same opening. The loud twang I heard when I released told me something went wrong. My bow hit the stand and threw my arrow off track.
The rabbit bolted than cut back towards me. I quickly reloaded and launched another arrow at the fleeing rabbit. I was with the amazing sound of the arrow striking home. The rabbit took off with my white fletching sticking out behind its shoulder. The rabbit made it 40 yards before it piled up in the tall weeds. I could not fathom what had just happened. Within 15 minutes I had shot not 1 but 2 rabbits on the run with my grandpa’s bow!!
The rest of the day I missed more rabbits, but I still held my own against the other 3 shotgunners combined. It was a great day to say the least!!! That bow is going to be the front runner in my hunting fleet now. It is quite obvious we do well together! Cheers SS
