Back after a few years
« on: November 29, 2015, 01:13:00 AM »
I have been away for a few years and am ready to get back into traditional archery. When I left I had 4 new (to me) bows that I hadn't even shot.  I can't find a string to fit this one. When I unwrapped this one, I was surprised. I forgot I had been so fortunate to acquire such an 'ugly' bow.  Here are the specs.
Bow: Griffen TD
Bowyer: John McCullough
S/N: 2490606
Spec: 47# @ 28"
Length: 60"
Is this curly maple limbs? And what string should I get for it? Also, is the difference between the tips normal? Thanks for any help. Here are a few photos.

The bowyer, John McCullough has stopped making bows. You've got a gem there and the tips are as they should be. I believe those limbs are a version of curly maple known as quilted maple.

I would contact Josh Sowerby aka Oliverstacy a fine string maker and member of Trad Gang then have him build a 58.5" custom string for you... That's what works for my 60" Griffin longbow...   :dunno:  ...

Beautiful bow!  And as mentioned quite a treasure.  I'm more of a recurve guy generally, but do own a couple of Longbows that I just can't let go of. A Griffin takedown is one of them.

Thanks for the info and welcome guys. So I need a 58.5" string and probably about 7" brace height?

Beautiful bow!  Several excellant string makers on here.  Ive used SBDs, Dan Brinkley, Ryan Steadman, and a couple others.  Ryans busy but the others will treat u well.

Allen with Ten Rings can build a string for that piece of art as well! I don't know much but I think 3" lower than bow length should be normally your string length.

Been trying to find one like that for months!  Don't bother with a string, just sell it to me!
