When I was a teen in the 60s we had lots of them in NW Iowa, the larger whitetail variety. By the mid 70s I saw a distribution map of known breeding populations. There was one small spot, right exactly where I lived between Sioux Center and Ireton and that was it. I have only seen two in the last twenty years. The Iowa whitetail variety were bigger and believe it or not better eating than the ones out west. The way the neighbor lady cooked them, they tasted better than geese and on an open fire spit they were even better.
