2012 (new pics of mount, page 4)
« on: December 07, 2015, 11:08:00 AM »
2012 was the last time I killed a deer with my bow. I've had some bad luck, with a couple lost animals and a few misses. After working on my bow, my luck has finally changed.

I hit the woods this morning looking for a new tree that was near a trail that I saw 6 deer on Friday morning. Planning on being set up by 6am, I had to wait for some light to see what was climbable. Dark and foggy, and a GPS that didn't put me in the right spot, I finally found a tree to climb. I was about 25 yards from my target tree.

I wasn't happy, with all the walking around and noise I made. But, I was finally in a tree. I pulled my bow up and got my arrow with tracker string already attached.
It was already 6:45. I looked down hill from my stand, from where I expect those 6 deer to come from and ...... hold on, I have to do something.     :archer2:

So, right away I saw a deer around 100 yards out, walking my way. I got on my feet and waited. When it stopped and turned around to walk back down hill, I gave a bleat call. It stopped and looked my way. Here it comes. A few minutes later, I gave two more bleats. Now it's walking right at me. It stopped and stood broadside at 10 yards, with it's head and neck behind a tree.

Can't wait to here the rest of the story.

side note: consumer grade gps units get, at best, 20-30ft accuracy and that is in open field conditions. Once you bring them into any sort of cover, like trees, accuracy can quickly jump to 100ft+. GPS is line-of-sight with satellites, so more cover = less accuracy.

If you are using the unit to mark points and track-back to that point later...satellites are in different positions on different days, so each day, the unit will bring you to a different point....all in the general area of several hundred sq. ft.

As he was looking around, I saw the head turn away. I came to full draw, settled my newly added single sight pin low on his chest and the arrow was away. Immediately, string came out of my home made tracker like a big fish was on. I knew it was mine. After 60 yards, it just walked off, still pulling line. 120 yards, the tail was spinning like a propeller and down it went. Another minute of kicking and done.

The arrow was stuck in the ground and was broken.

I'd say the drought is over. Nice buck. I know it can be very frustrating at times but glad to see you stuck with it. Too easy to give up and return to the wheels, or, and I hate to even say it, go to the Xbow.
