November Hat Trick ( Hunt # 3 is compleat on page 2)
« on: December 08, 2015, 12:39:00 PM »
Hunt # 1

Well with the wormer weather that we have had this fall its been conducive to getting the kids out more then usual.
Sunday Nov 1st was a beautiful fall day and so I decided to take David ( my oldest ) along on an afternoon hunt to my local urban park hunt.
We setup along a powerline where I had seen some deer activity and made a little ground blind for us......

It wasn't long and we heard commotion across the powerline had a little buck chase a doe and two fawns right by us!!!  We were pretty excited about the action but no shot offered!!
I had all ready filled my state buck tag but have earned a buck tag for the park.
We were set for whatever came by
We were enjoying the evening and darkness was approaching quickly.....When   :archer:
I see that its a spike and as he gets to a shooting window at about 12 yards and I let him have it!
Hes quartering to me and I hit him about 8" behind the shoulder so I knew instantly that this will be an overnight thing.......
David and I were pretty pumped, this was the first time he's been with me when I have shot something!!!

The next morning finds us heading back out to start looking for him and on the drive over David is inspecting the "Deer Shot Placement Overlay"

Well it wasn't an easy track but with the help of Kaz and David we persevered and found him about 12:00

Good lessons learned in a difficult track job for any hunter but I was glad that for Davids sake this one ended like it did

Now being a spike I was able to use my doe tag on him to preserve my Anysex tag for the upcoming rut

I took off work at 1:00 and was to my spot by 1:30.
I found a sweet spot behind a deadfall on the powerline again and I was hogging out a spot  with my pruners when I look up and see a small buck about 75 yards down the way and hes headed my way!!!
Now it’s the last day and anything with head gear will do, actually I also had an antlerless tag in my pocket too so if it was brown It had my full attention!!!
I quickly grab my bow and manage to have enough room to draw my bow as I hadn’t finished clearing everything yet…..
Hes still coming but at 15 yards and with no available shot, he gets my wind and takes off, 50mph wind gusts can get all kinds of squirrely……

I finished setting up and just get settled in and have two fawns come into the powerline……
This is crazy, the wind doesn’t even seem to faze them!!
Over the next couple of hours I see 6 deer with the last one being a little buck right at dark……
Hes working up the powerline just like the first one did but this time he didn’t smell me!
He got into my shooting window and was broadside at about 5 or 6 steps……
I whistle softly drew and shot but with him being that close I rushed it thinking that he would spook if I took to long   :readit:

Id much prefer them stopping on their own   :archer2:

He spun and ran across the power line about 30 yards then stops and looks back, 30 seconds later he bolts about another 40 yards then stops again, hes acting like a mortally wounded buck but then he just slowly walks into the woods with a slight hunch to him……

Travis and I start tracking him about an hour later and found blood right away!
The blood trail is good but it lacks bubbles and the color is not just lung, liver or artery  but a combination of some sort…..
We found my arrow in the powerline about right before he entered the woods and although it was covered with blood it had just the slightest smell of guts….
At 5 or 6 steps its Not a pass through but it fell out as he was running?

The next morning found Travis and I on the trail it didn’t take us long to realize that backing out the night before was the right idea!!!!
Good blood inside the wood line but it soon dissipated after a couple of beds...
It took us a bit but Travis found where he had started to  bed down again about another 50 to 75 yards after his last bed and then he was another 30 yards or so down the hill.  The hit was within a few inches of the spot we picked on the overlay, just above the brisket and right at the diaphragm….
Another ½” lower and it would have been solid brisket….   :help:
My quick/not picking a spot shot resulted in a poor hit but The Lord is faithful no matter how much we screw up and we praised His name for the successful recovery

        Thank you Lord!
