Finally tossed the training wheels!!!!
« on: January 24, 2010, 07:48:00 PM »
I recently acquired two nice Fred Bear recurves and have fallen in love with traditional archery!!! I still have a ton to learn but hopefully with the help of you fine folks here on the forums I should be alright. As a wheelie bow shooter I never worried about things like fletching and right or left feathers, arrow weight, proper arrow length and the such. What can I saw all I thought I should know was how to shoot out to 20 or so yards. Now I'm ashamed, hopefully you guys can steer me onto the proper path!

Wow!! I feel welcomed already!!! Would it be too much to ask any of you fellows to help me out? The problem I am having is I can not find the information I am looking for(yes I have searched). I cant seem to find information on when to use right or left wing feathers, if I draw the string with my right hand it is a RH bow correct? Also if I am shooting a 50# @ 28"( that's what my draw length was on my wheelie bow) what overall arrow weight should I be looking at shooting..Broad head weight as well....If any of you could either e-mail or PM me with a link or just answers on this it would be appreciated!

Welcome!

Right or left wing feathers doesn't matter as long as whichever wing you shoot, that the given arrows be just one way or the other (don't mix the wings).

I draw 28" like I did on my compound, but not everyone does.

At least 10 grains per pound (gpp) of draw weight at your draw is a great place to be.  Less gpp is more about speed than quietness or penetration.

The latest trend is to have much more point weight forward of center on the arrow than you probably did for the compound.  18 to 24% front of center (foc) is considered high foc, a good thing according to Dr. Ashby.

There is so much to learn and so much fun to have flinging those arrows with stick and string.

Welcome to the addiction, afflicition, obsession or whatever you decide to call it.

You found the right place to learn trad.

It sounds like you might want to hook up with a local trad club.

Good luck,
